Ontario Angus Board Meeting Highlights - October 16th, 2011
The fall meeting of the Angus board was held on October 16th at the Brampton Fair Grounds. We are preparing a new Angus booth and it should be ready for the Royal Winter Fair. Julie is to finalize the pictures with the agency. We decided on 2 screens at 33 inches wide. Take time to check it out at the fair. We are hoping to display it at more events so if there is an event in your area that you would like it just let us know.
The Royal Winter Fair is fast approaching. Julie has sent out consigner letters telling them of the dress code and the no paint rule. Tattoos will be checked at weigh in and if they are unreadable they will be brought back for a committee to review and if they are still not readable the animal will not be allowed to show. It looks to be a big show with over 180 entries in the Angus division.
The Futurity Catalogue is being edited this weekend and will be sent to the printer by mid week. We have 48 entries and it looks to be a great sale. The plan is to have some catalogues at the Royal for the interested breeders and 4-Hers that are there. The Angus Draw tickets need to be sold for us to break even, so those with tickets please sell them and all breeders please buy one or two to support the board activities.
Chris Aulthouse has been hired by the Canadian Angus Association as the Ontario Fieldman. We will be inviting him to the annual meeting in January. He has just started the job and should be at several of the fall calf sales.
The Ontario Annual Meeting is being held on Saturday Jan 28th in Peterborough. Each local board needs to submit names for Honourary President and Purebred Breeder of the year by the end of November for the board to vote. The awards will be presented at the annual meeting. The board will meet again on Friday Jan 27th in Peterborough.
Ontario Field Day - July 17th
Over 40 breeders participated in the field day at Cairnlee Acres hosted by Victor, Yvonne and Andrew Richardson. Sandy Reid from RK Animal Supply did a tattooing demonstration for us. Scott Bothwell from BIO did an ultrasound demonstratinn using the Cairnlee yearling Angus heifers. Kajal Devani from Canadian Angus explained what EPD's are, how they are calculated and how they are best used and challenged everyone to give their input to make the Peformance program better. A judging competition was held and a mother/son team agreed with the official judges - Richard Tanner and Andrew Richardson. Congratulations to Robert and Margaret May. A delicious roast beef dinner followed. Thanks to the food convenors - Mary Tanner and Yvonne Richardson - they even had time for a few homemade pies and of course to the Richardson family for all the work that goes into an event like this.
Western Ontario News
Lars & Rene Bouman hosted the Western Ontario Angus Association picnic at their home near Sombra on Sunday July 10th. The afternoon was spent watching the boats on the river and catching up with the recent happenings in our Angus family. Beef on a bun and a smorgasbord supper brought the delightful afternoon to a close.
Sorry to report the death of Gerald E Miller on July 6th. Gerry was a former President of our club and a donation has been made to the Cameron McTaggart Scholarship in hi memory.
Congratulations to Jeremy and Courtney Tanner on the recent arrival of their daughter - Ainsley Elaine.
Proud grandparents are Richard and Mary Tanner.
