Once a year Canadian Junior Angus members from all over Canada meet up in one place and have a blast! This year I had the great opportunity to be involved in this annual three days of fun! On Thursday, July 21st, 2011 Canadian Junior Angus members from across Canada gathered in Weyburn, Saskatchewan for the 12th annual National Junior Angus Show. With participants from every province and nearly 100 juniors in total the show was one of the largest to date. Everyone who was in attendance would agree that we had a truly amazing time and that the competition was intense! Everyone worked extremely hard on all of their entries and the showcase of talent was amazing! We started the show off with the CJAA annual meeting and after that everything was in full swing. We competed in team grooming and individual judging and then had dinner. After dinner we went to an outdoor water park and had a blast, this was a highlight for many juniors! On Friday we competed in showmanship, print marketing, sales talk and our speeches were given. Anyone who advanced from individual judging participated in show ring team judging and then after all that was said and done we had our Angus Cook Off. Teams cooked unique and tasty steak and served it to new CEO Rob Smith, everyone thought he might explode, but he impressed us and held in there! On Saturday conformation classes were held and everyone had their animals looking just right for the show. After conformation everyone headed back to their hotels and campsites and got cleaned up for the banquet. Prizes were awarded, our silent auction was held and then all juniors competed in Quiz Bowl. Ontario was represented well with many 1st and 2nd place finishes throughout all the categories. It was crazy for all of us to think that our fun times had quickly come to an end and that it was time to pack up and head home. When I look back on the experience I can’t help but think of all the friends I met and got to know quite well over such a short period of time. Everyone in attendance would agree that we made some great friendships that will never be forgotten! Everyone that was at Showdown 2011 is looking foreword to Showdown 2012 which will be held right in our own back yard for the first time since 2002. You will want to be in Lindsay, Ontario July 19-21, 2012 for an amazing time with kids just like you! If you want to get going on your entries just go to the CAA website and look under “Juniors” for all rules and possible categories. We hope to see everyone in Lindsay next year!
